The returnee survey result: 100 “kikoku” scenarios | 帰国子女100人が思うこと（調査結果）

When I started the returnee (kikoku) project, I took a survey and received over 100 responses from many kikokus. Here are the results – their experiences and opinions of 100 returnees in Japan.

帰国子女プロジェクトを始めた頃、日本の帰国子女の実態を調査しようと、アンケートをとりました。結果、100人以上の帰国子女から回答をいただきました（ありがとうございます！）。以下、彼らの実体験、そして帰国子女に関する本音をお届けします。

Dear Japan, // 愛する日本へ

I missed you when I was in New York. I didn’t realize how much I connected with you, until I was deprived of my ties with you. In NY, we spoke of other minority stars like Martin Luther King Jr. for the African Americans and Che Guevara for the Hispanics – but where were the Asians, let alone the Japanese? We have Ichiro in baseball, of course, but who else? And where are the Japanese women?

ニューヨークにいた頃、あなたがとても恋しかった。他の人と話をしていても、そもそも日本人の名前が会話に出ることも稀だった。キング牧師やチェゲベラ。いろんな著名人はいるけれど、その中で語られる日本人は一人もいなかった（イチローぐらいかな）。さらに言うと、日本人女性の名は聞くことがなかった。

That is one of the reasons why I came back.
I came back to you because I wish to give back to you, and to find more Japanese stars that could shine in the world.

だから今、日本に戻っています。
日本に貢献することはもちろん、世界で活躍する日本人女性を見届けたい。そんな想いで帰国しました。

Bullied as a “kikoku”: the scene that remains unchanged for decades| 何十年たっても変わらない、帰国子女のいじめ問題

“You’re an American! That’s why you can’t even do that.”

“That” meaning taking off the lid on the glass milk container. In some Japanese elementary schools, we are all served the same lunch, occasionally with milk in glass bottles. The lid is made of paper, and we need to peel it off to open. Very different from the milk cartons we had back in America.

「お前はアメリカ人だからそんなこともできないんだ」

そんなこと、とは、学校の牛乳瓶の蓋を開けることだった。アメリカではみんな紙パックの牛乳を飲んでいたので、「蓋を開ける」なんてことは必要なかった。しかも日本の学校で出された牛乳瓶は、紙の蓋がついていて、どう開けるのかわからなかった。

As I struggled to open the lid (I had no idea how to), my fingers slipped – and I pushed the paper lid into the bottle. There you go – a shower of milk over the table. Along with a shower of “You’re an American!” cries.

どうにか開けようと試行錯誤していたところ、指がズボッと入り、牛乳がぶしゃっとこぼれたのであった。そし周りからは「アメリカ人！」の連呼。

What it’s like to be a returnee in Japan | 「帰国子女」として日本で暮らして思うこと。

I’m Japanese as well as not. I love Japan, but I also question many norms in society. Countless times have I been judged, either appropriately or wrongly, in ways I had never perceived myself before. I wanted to be Japanese, yet I knew I could never fully be one. Where was my place in this society?

日本人なのに、どこかが違う。でも、日本人だし、日本人でありたい。
そんな中途半端な自分は、この社会に居場所などあるのだろうか。

When it’s time for you to determine your dream | 夢を「決める」勇気：あなたはその働き方で夢を叶えられますか？

There’s a myriad of things I wish to try in my life. That includes all my dreams, both old and new, as well as dreams that have yet to be dreamt. But just as you are ready for more ambitions, you have to get ready to go out into the so-called “real” world and work.

人生でやってみたいことは山ほどある。夢も無数にある。まだまだその夢は増え続ける。
なのに、そんな時に「就活」がやってくる。社会に出なければいけない時が来る。

But I’m not ready to commit myself to one job or dream. How could I, who knows nothing about the “real” world, know what kind of job to choose, and what kind of dream I should follow?
– Have you ever had this kind of feeling? I certainly have.

やりたいことを一つに絞って一つの仕事を選ぶだなんてできない。まだ社会に一歩も踏み出せていない自分が、どれが自分に合った仕事で、どんな夢を目指せば良いのか、わかるわけない。
ーそんな風に思ったことありませんか？
少なくとも私はあります。

This is why I feared the day when I would have to determine my dream.

Japan is located on board four major tectonic plates – hence why we have numerous earthquakes and volcanic activity. We often hear of natural disasters that caused a large number of casualties… but did you know that there was a massive volcanic eruption back in 2000 that resulted in 0 deaths?
