HASAMI: Revival of a town with design and porcelain | 庶民的な器が町を蘇らせた！長崎県波佐見町

Have you ever heard of Hasami town in Nagasaki prefecture?
Maybe a few of you know “HASAMI PORCELAIN“, a tableware brand that is popular for its simple design.

This small town is actually quite a beauty – and I had the chance to visit over the weekend in February.

長崎県波佐見町と聞くと、ぴんとくる方はどれくらいいるでしょうか。少なくとも英語では誰も知らないと思います。
一方、器好きな方は HASAMI PORCELAIN を聞いたことがあるかもしれません。最近、シンプルなデザインが話題の波佐見焼です。

波佐見焼の産地、長崎県波佐見町。
2月頃、この小さな町に一泊二日の旅行で訪れました。

Yakushima (Kagoshima prefecture) – the island where it rains “for 35 days a month.” This is what people say when they hear Yakushima; the island is typically known for its excessive rainy weather. It is also known as the “island of the gods”, due to its beautiful nature commonly attributed to the Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke. Most people head over to Yakushima to challenge themselves on the 10hour hike to the Jomon-sugi (cedar tree).

When I visited in October last year, I had desperately hoped for sun… but the weather forecast only showed 100% chance of rain. I guess the gods forbade me from the sun.

「１ヶ月に35日間雨が降る」と言われる屋久島。どんなに晴れ女でも、屋久島には敵いません。私が行った時はなんと滞在期間ピンポイントで降水率100%という大雨予報でした。別名「神の島」屋久島ですが、神々は私に雨を降らせたかったのかもしれません。笑

Another fun and creative location in Fukuoka has arrived!
Fablab Hakata β – a casual space where you can enjoy making whatever you can make. They have 3D printers, laser cutters, and other digital devices (I’m still a beginner in this field so I don’t know the technical terms!) that are bound to immerse you in creating your original product.

数ヶ月前にオープンした、ファブラボ博多。3Dプリンターやレーザーカッターを含め、様々な機材が揃い、「つくる」ことに没頭できる空間。

The venue occasionally hosts workshops as well, and I participated in one today – combining traditional material with digital technology to produce an original coaster.

ファブラボ博多ではワークショップも実施されます。今回、私は「マテリアルマーケット」に参加し、オリジナルコースターを作りました！

Discovering the untold side of history in Nagasaki | 隠された歴史の一面を見る、長崎の旅。

Nagasaki. As soon as I reached the station, I headed to the tourist information center to check the location of my first destination, a museum. However, the museum was nowhere on the maps.

長崎につき、観光案内所へ。しかし、どの地図を見ても、不思議とその資料館は載っていなかった。そんな感じで始まった長崎の旅。
最初の行き先は、どの地図にも載っていない、ある博物館でした。

Golden Week – a week of consecutive holidays from late April to early May every year in Japan. But it wasn’t very “golden” in parts of the Kyushu region.

I had the opportunity to visit Mashiki town in Kumamoto – a town that greatly suffered from the earthquakes that rattled the region on April 14 and 15. I was able to visit one of the evacuation centers to speak with the evacuees and gather information on what is needed at the site, and how the conditions of the individuals are.

While making my way towards the Fukuoka castle ruins, I found myself lost in a residential area in Akasaka district.
