AIZU in Fukushima |

Finally, finally, finally!!! Got to go visit a local region with my international friends from grad school 🙂
We had an awesome time – thanks to beautiful Aizu!

All set to go!

First day – thanks to the sunny weather, we were able to walk around the city.
After a 4 hour bus ride from Tokyo, we headed off for lunch at “Takino“, famous for their special Aizu meal called “wappa meshi“.

SO GOOD!!

Aizu is also famous for their horse meat. All my international friends loved it!

Unfortunately, I can't eat horse meat much :'(

Then, we visited a sake brewery, where our friend’s father works: Tatsu-izumi Brewery.
We received a wonderful guide through the brewery and learned so many new things!

Thank you so much!!!

For example, here are some of the things we learned:
There are two categories of rice – rice made for food and rice made for sake.
The rice made for sake has bigger seeds – not necessarily tasty (although they can still be eaten).

The flavor of sake depends on the balance between the sweetness and the alcohol.
Sake is made after 25 – 30 days, depending on how that balance is adjusted.

After it's done, we wash this whole tank by hand!

After learning all about the sake process, we were able to taste them!
We all loved them so much that every one of us bought at least one bottle as a souvenir.

After waving goodbye to the staff, we spent the rest of the day visiting the famous historical sites: Tsuruga Castle, where the Aizu clan thrived, and Iimori Mountain, where the Byakko-tai faced their unfortunate fate.

We were getting worn out from walking everywhere, but nonetheless, it was so much fun!!
But the fun didn’t stop here… Onto the second day (next entry)!
